Many of the tools I’ve been covering in the STC’s Intro to 3D Making workshop can be used by anyone; for free or free-ish
3D Modeling & Making
- 3D modeling: check out Autodesk‘s 123D design: http://www.123dapp.com/design
- 3D slicing: check out Cura (especially if you are a WWU student looking to prep your model for the STC’s Ultimaker 2 printers) : https://ultimaker.com/en/products/cura-software
3D Scanning and Sharing
- 3D scanning: Armed with an iPad (also can be mounted to iPhone) and a Structure or iSense scanner, check out these two apps to kick off your 3D scanning endeavors.
- Â iTSeez3d
- Â Structure Scanner
- Also, if you are finding that your scans are not very well aligned, calibration might be needed. Try using the Structure Sensor Calibrator app if you are having problems getting quality scans.
- 3D model display (sans-printing): I am a big fan of SketchFab (see below). As a way to not only share scans, but also to annotate your scans and 3D models.Â
3D repositories and model sharing
Why reinvent the wheel, when someone else has already made it and shared it? Two great places to get creative-commons models made by other creators:
- Thingaverse (Makerbot centered community)
- YouMagine (Ultimaker centered community)
